Holding their hands up
DEDICATED community workers are inspiring a new generation of local volunteers.
19-year-old Matthew Blackmore, of Penygarn, has been spending his time cleaning up Pontypool Park and providing gardening services for the elderly.
The painting and decorating student from Pontypool College said he was impressed with the work of local community worker and newly elected councillor for Penygarn and St Cadoc's, Neil Mason.
"I would love to be a community man like Neil. His good work in the community made me want to help," he said.
Matthew has been collecting rubbish from Pontypool Park and providing hedge-trimming services for pensioners in the Woodlands.
He said he is proud to be helping the community where he lives and his parents support him "100 per cent".
One of those to benefit from the youngster's good deed is Margaret and Bill Day.
The couple, aged 85 and 88 respectively, have difficulty with gardening because they both suffer from arthritis and said they were delighted with Matthew's work.
Mrs Day said: "It is wonderful. We were very surprised and very pleased when he offered. More youngsters should be in jobs like this."
