Green school gets platinum award

A TORFAEN school is the first in the county borough to receive the Eco-Schools platinum award, and seventh in Wales.

New Inn Primary school, in St Matthew's Road Pontypool, had to go through ten years of tests and inspections before attaining the award.

The Eco-Schools programme, funded by the Assembly, begins with bronze, silver and gold certificates.

These were gained by initiatives like encouraging pupils to wear jumpers while turning down the thermostat, and starting a recycling system.

The platinum award required pupils to give inspectors a tour of the school's green initiatives and attend individual interviews, and it involved all pupils from nursery to Year Six, but especially the youngsters' eco committee.

Teacher Linda Livesey, said: "At the moment we are holding a green week involving energy saving drives."

Mathew Bunt, the Eco-Schools officer said: "The eco committee and pupils of New Inn have demonstrated that they really do care about planet earth's future."

The school has recently launched a Eco-Curriculum based on global citizenship and sustainable development.

Ms Livesey added: "The Eco-Curriculum will teach children about their responsibility to people around the world and that their actions affect the whole planet."
