Clubs look to the future
Exclusive By Keith Fairbank

AT THE end of a difficult season for Talywain RFC, the club can look forward to a successful future after winning the Gwent Youth Cup last week.

And beaten finalists Caldicot are similarly optimistic, with 13 of the squad who played at Rodney Parde on Friday night graduating to the senior XV this summer.

Caldicot's head coach, ex-Pooler boss Steve Hill, said: "Those 13 players were all involved, either coming off the bench or playing from the start.

"They will be the bulk of our team next year, and we need to change a few things to accomodate them."

Beyond them, the future looks increasingly bright as the 13 youth graduates will be replaced by 26 more teenagers coming up from the under-17s.

"The club is going from strength to strength at the moment", said Hill.

Talywain, meanwhile, are also hoping to milk their successful youth side for players after their first XV failed to fulfill a number of end-of-season fixtures. Club committee member David Bodington confirmed the club will not be folding, and predicts a rosy future in Division Five East.

Their youth ply their trade four divisions above Caldicot - and the gulf in class shone through on Friday in this 21-0 win in Newport.

Caldicot came closest to scoring when a break by centre Joe Bajadda took him to within a couple of yards of the Talywain line - but the ball was cleared and from the resultant lineout Talywain had a clear run to the try line.

Bajadda's clearance kick from a second half scrum was charged down and Talywain were soon 14-0 up, before the pick of the tries in the last move of the match saw a slick passing move allow a touchdown under the posts.

Hill added: "I think Talywain were a bigger side than Caldicot but we gave 100 per cent and that's all we can ask for.

"Getting to the final, and finishing runners up in the League, shows the excellent job done by Ryan Buckley and his coaches who've been here for the last five years. It's a great achievement."
