Rocking all over the world
Exclusive By Keith Fairbank

FOUR years after their inception, Rockfield Rovers are heading for the Gwent County League.

A 2-1 win over Tintern Abbey secured the red and white army the East Gwent League title but until last weekend there was confusion as to whether that was enough. They had been due to face Llanwern and Fleur-de-Lys in a three-way promotion play-off but League officials have confirmed Rovers will instead go up automatically leaving the other pair to fight for the second spot.

Delighted, club manager Dave MacDonald said: "They came to look at our ground on Wednesday and said it was A1 in meeting the ground criteria but said we would have to play a play-off.

"Then last week they held a meeting, and we heard on the grapevine that we were automatically promoted. We phoned them up to see what was going on and that's when we had it confirmed."

Promotion after four years of East Gwent football marks the end of a seesaw season for the Monmouth club, who won the West Dean Charities Cup in the autumn but crashed out of three more Cup semi-finals last month.

Goalkeeper Neil Williams said that, in the midst of the summer break, the club would be organising a five-a-side senior tournament on Saturday, May 24.
